THE ROLE OF ADULT EDUCATION IN PROMOTING HEALTH EDUCATION IN CHANCHAGA LGA
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The education renders a significant contribution in promoting public health. The individuals are able to generate awareness in terms of various factors that are indispensable in promoting good health and well-being. These factors have been stated as follows:
Diet and Nutrition – Diet and nutrition is the primary aspect that needs to be taken into consideration to promote good health. Consumption of unhealthy food items and irregular eating habits may cause detrimental effects upon the health of the individuals. They experience various health problems and illnesses, such as, obesity, heart problems and so forth. On the other hand, healthy and nutritious diet enables the individuals to keep good health. When the individuals are engaged in jobs, which enable them to make use of their intellectual skills or when they are engaged in manual jobs, which enable them to make use of their physical abilities, then too they need to consume essential nutrients. Through education, one is able to acquire knowledge in terms of essential nutrients. Within one’s diet, it is vital for the individuals to have nutrients such as, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals, fats, and so forth. Furthermore, when preparing meals, it is essential for the individuals to possess sufficient knowledge in terms of ingredients used, and prepare meals in a clean and hygienic environment. Therefore, educational institutions and training centres are the ones that make provision of knowledge and information to the individuals in terms of diet and nutrition.
Physical Activities – Physical activities is another vital area in which the individuals, belonging to all age groups, categories and backgrounds are required to get engaged in. Since the stage of early childhood, when children get enrolled in pre-schools, they are encouraged to participate in sports and various kinds of physical activities. These include, water sports, yoga, taekwondo, running and so forth. The students belonging to elementary, secondary and senior secondary schools also participate in physical activities in schools. In some cases, when individuals develop keen interest and enthusiasm in different kinds of physical activities, they may even take them up as careers. In higher educational institutions as well, physical activities are given recognition. The students are provided training in physical activities and possess constructive viewpoints and develop interest and enthusiasm towards acquisition of education. In order to participate in physical activities in an appropriate manner, the individuals need to put into practice strategies. They need to augment their skills and abilities in terms of physical activities. Education is regarded as one of the significant aspects that enable the individuals to be well-equipped in terms of physical activities. Furthermore, the trainers need to possess knowledge and skills and ensure that they carry out their job duties in an appropriate manner.
Anger Management – Anger is regarded as a negative feeling which may cause detrimental effects upon the physical as well as psychological well-being of the individuals. This is especially when it is observed to a major extent. Anger is also regarded as a natural feeling, but the individuals need to control it. They need to ensure that it does not influence their lives in an unfavourable manner. Through education, one is able to generate awareness in terms of methods and approaches that are necessary to manage one’s anger. These are, when one observes anger, they need to remain calm, they should leave the place or subject, which is enabling them to feel angry, drink a glass of water, read religious texts, watch a television show, listen to music and count numbers. These are some of the methods that normally help the individuals to curb the feelings of anger. In educational institutions and within employment settings, educators and employers may get angry on their students and workforce respectively. But when they get angry, they need to make sure that they do not inflict major harm or hurt the sentiments of others. Their primary aim is to enable the individuals to recognise their responsibilities and carry out their tasks and functions in a well-organized manner.
Stress Management – Stress is common among individuals. The individuals, belonging to all age groups may feel stressed. When students feel overwhelmed due to academic learning and exams, they may feel stressed. When individuals are engaged in employment opportunities and are required to work long hours and when their job duties are demanding, they may feel stressed. Whereas, the management of household responsibilities also cause stress and so forth. Stress may have negative effects upon physical as well as psychological well-being of the individuals. Hence, when they are putting into operation, their tasks and activities, they need to ensure that they are able to carry them out in a well-organized manner and they do not cause stress. Through acquisition of education, one is able to generate awareness in terms of methods and approaches that are used to manage one’s stress in an appropriate manner. These include, establishing positive thinking, augmenting one’s skills and abilities, implementing proper time management skills, carrying out one’s job duties in a well-organized manner, maintaining effective terms and relationships with other individuals, making effective decisions and inculcating the traits of diligence, resourcefulness and conscientiousness. When individuals put into operation these methods, they are able to cope with stressful situations satisfactorily.
Positive Thinking – Maintaining positive thinking and constructive outlook is regarded to be of utmost significance in the achievement of personal and professional goals. In educational institutions, the educators, staff members and students are different from each other in terms of learning abilities, natures, attitudes, behavioural traits and other factors such as, caste, creed, race, ethnicity, religion, gender, age and socio-economic background. This is apparent that one cannot work in isolation. It is essential for the individuals to form effective terms and relationships with others and work in co-ordination and integration. They need to acknowledge other cultures, religions, ethnicities, castes and socio-economic backgrounds. There should not be any kind of discrimination on the basis of any of these factors. On the other hand, lack of positive thinking may enable the individuals to develop the feelings of antagonism. When the individuals within educational institutions and employment settings are antagonistic towards each other, they would certainly experience problems and impediments in the implementation of tasks and activities as well as in the achievement of personal and professional goals. On the other hand, health and well-being also gets affected in a negative manner. Therefore, to maintain good health and promote well-being, it is essential for the individuals to develop positive thinking.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Improving the Skills of Health Care Specialists and Medical Practitioners – Through the acquisition of professional degrees in the medical field, such as, MBBS or MD, the individuals are able to acquire efficient knowledge and information in terms of their professions. They are able to augment their skills and abilities, so they are able to carry out their job duties in a well-organized manner. When the individuals aspire to pursue medical professions, they ensure that they seek admission in reputed medical colleges. Health care specialists and medical practitioners are engaged in a profession that is not only meant to enhance their well-being and livelihoods opportunities. But they are rendering an effective contribution in promoting well-being of the community as well. In the educational programs, it is essential to make use of modern, scientific and innovative methods that would augment the competencies and aptitudes of the individuals. There are number of aspects that need to be taken into account to promote health care and well-being of the individuals. The health care specialists and medical practitioners need to provide them information in terms of diet and nutrition, medicines and other activities that they need to take into consideration to maintain their health.
Preservation of the Environment – The individuals need to put into practice effectual methods and strategies to preserve the environment. In order to preserve the environmental conditions in an adequate manner, the individuals need to generate awareness in terms of various aspects. These are, curbing deforestation, planting more trees and plants, ensuring that the water bodies are clean and individuals do not put in any kinds of waste materials into them, keep the land clean and ensuring that waste materials are not thrown on the roads.
Another important pollution that needs to be curbed is air pollution. Air pollution is primarily caused due to emission of gaseous fumes by the industries, factories and vehicles. Hence, when the production and manufacturing processes are put into operation in industries and factories, then the processes need to be carried out in such a manner that pollution is curbed. On the other hand, it is vital to get the pollution checked of the vehicles. In educational institutions at all levels, preservation of the environment has been regarded as one of the major aspects. In schools, colleges and universities, within the classrooms, students are generated awareness in terms of this aspect by their educators. Furthermore, there are organization of workshops, and seminars as well, which may render an effective contribution in facilitating participation of the members of the educational institutions in the preservation of the environment.
Promoting Family Planning – Promoting family planning is essential for the individuals to sustain their livelihoods in a well-organized manner. In rural communities, the individuals usually belong to poverty stricken, deprived, marginalized and socio-economically backward sections of the society. They usually do not even possess the basic literacy skills of reading, writing and numeracy and are primarily engaged in agriculture and farming practices. They are unaware of the aspect of family planning. Research has indicated that they get married at an early age and have around five to six children in one nuclear family. Hence, when women are below 30 years of age, they have around five to six children. This is also regarded as one of the major causes of increase in the mortality rate among women and children.
As a result of early marriage and frequent child births, women and children are the ones, who experience health problems. It is challenging for the individuals, belonging to deprived communities to take care of needs and requirements of all family members. On the other hand, in urban areas, individuals are educated and career-oriented. They get married, when they are above 20 years of age and normally have two to three children in the family. It is manageable for them to take care of needs of all family members. Hence, through education, one is able to generate awareness in terms of family planning and taking care of their needs and requirements in an appropriate manner.
Promoting Cleanliness – Cleanliness is regarded as one of the aspects that is of utmost significance in promoting good health and well-being. Cleanliness is a comprehensive aspect, which needs to be carried out in terms of number of aspects, such as, preparation of meals, attire and overall environmental conditions within home. The individuals need to be aware of this aspect not only within the households but also outside the households. Within the households, individuals usually make sure that they carry out the tasks and activities that would maintain cleanliness in an appropriate manner. In urban communities, individuals may hire helpers, but in rural communities, they are required to carry out various tasks and functions on their own. In educational institutions, it is one of the important concepts that the educators emphasise upon. From the stage of early childhood, the students are taught, that they need to assist their parents and teachers in maintaining cleanliness. Furthermore, in higher educational institutions, this concept is reinforced. The students are trained in terms of methods and strategies that are effectual in promoting cleanliness. Therefore, students are able to generate awareness that cleanliness in all areas is indispensable for the purpose of promoting good health and well-being.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Research has indicated that individuals, usually belonging to deprived, marginalized and economically weaker sections of the society discriminated against women and girls. They were regarded to as inferior in status as compared to their male counterparts. They were discouraged from getting enrolled in schools and were trained in terms of the implementation of household responsibilities. Hence, discriminatory treatment against girls and women is one of the major factors, leading to deprived health conditions. Furthermore, girls and women experienced challenges in the sustenance of overall living conditions. It is stated that educating a woman is educating the entire nation. Hence, encouraging girls and women towards acquisition of education is one of the major factors in promoting empowerment opportunities. When empowerment opportunities would be promoted among women, they would render an effective contribution in promoting well-being of their families and communities. The various tasks and functions which they would carry out in a well-organized manner are, making effective decisions, taking care of needs of elderly individuals satisfactorily, child development, health care and so forth. Therefore, it can be stated that when women are educated and aware, they would carry out their responsibilities in an appropriate manner and promote well-being and comfort.
