INFLUENCE OF EUROPEAN WRITING ON POST COLONIAL AFRICAN PLAYWRIGHTS: A STUDY OF SOYINKAS DEATH AND THE KINGS HORSEMEN AND THE LION AND THE JEWEL

Abstract

This study examines the influence of European writing on post-colonial African playwrights, with a focus on Wole Soyinka’s Death and the King’s Horseman and The Lion and the Jewel. The research explores how European literary traditions, particularly in terms of structure, themes, and characterization, have shaped the works of African playwrights in the post-colonial era. Using a qualitative approach, the study analyzes Soyinka’s plays to identify the interplay between indigenous African storytelling techniques and European dramatic conventions.

The findings reveal that Soyinka skillfully blends European dramatic forms, such as tragedy and comedy, with African oral traditions, myths, and cultural practices. In Death and the King’s Horseman, Soyinka employs the structure of Greek tragedy to address themes of cultural conflict and colonial disruption, while in The Lion and the Jewel, he uses satire and comedy to critique the clash between tradition and modernity. Despite the influence of European writing, Soyinka’s works remain deeply rooted in African cultural identity, reflecting a unique synthesis of global and local literary traditions.

The study concludes that post-colonial African playwrights like Soyinka have not merely imitated European writing but have redefined it to express African realities and perspectives. This hybridity enriches African literature and challenges the dominance of Eurocentric narratives. The research contributes to the discourse on post-colonial literature by highlighting the dynamic interplay between African and European literary traditions and their impact on the works of African playwrights.
