AN EVALUATION OF THE CONTRIBUTION OF COMMERCIAL BANKS IN FINANCING AND FACILITATING FOREIGN TRADE
ABSTRACT
This study is focused on the evaluation of the contribution of commercial banks in the financing and facilitating of foreign trade. The aim was to determine the effectiveness or otherwise of the roles of commercial banks in foreign trade financing. This was to enable a critical assessment of the bank’s operating system with a view to assessing the extent to which they have succeeded in satisfying their varying customers in international trade. Existing literature on the subject was reviewed in an attempt to discuss the concept of foreign trade. The study also reviewed various opinions of scholars on the subject of foreign trade financing by commercial banks and also dealt extensively on the various methods of settlements of debt in international trade and the various ways by which banks grant finance to exporters and importers. The interview technique and observation methods were the basic instruments used to generate data for the study. Hence some commercial banks were selected for the interviewing purpose and a wide range of literature on bank publications, journals, magazines and newspapers were equally consulted. The findings of this work showed that commercial banks play a very crucial role in the financing and facilitating of foreign trade in Nigeria. This is attributable to the support services given by banks to business investment spending the world over. The study revealed that commercial banks in Nigeria have been efficient in their roles as facilitators of foreign trade but there is still room for improvement. These were highlighted as recommendations in the last chapter.
