EFFECT OF STRESS ON EMPLOYEE PRODUCTIVITY IN LISTED DEPOSIT MONEY BANKS

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of stress on employee productivity in listed deposit money banks, a critical sector in the financial industry. Employee stress, stemming from factors such as workload, long working hours, job insecurity, and workplace conflicts, can significantly impact organizational performance. The study adopts a mixed-method approach, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative data collected through surveys, interviews, and organizational performance metrics. The findings reveal a dual impact of stress on productivity: while moderate stress can motivate employees to meet deadlines and achieve goals, chronic stress leads to burnout, absenteeism, and reduced efficiency. Key stressors identified include inadequate work-life balance, high performance expectations, and insufficient support systems. The research highlights the need for stress management interventions, such as employee wellness programs, flexible work policies, and effective communication strategies, to mitigate the adverse effects of stress and enhance productivity. This study provides actionable insights for bank management to foster a healthier work environment, ensuring sustainable employee performance and organizational success.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Stress has become an increasingly common phenomenon in modern workplaces, particularly in high-demand sectors such as banking. The competitive nature of the banking industry, coupled with stringent regulatory requirements, rapid technological advancements, and heightened customer expectations, creates a challenging work environment for employees. Listed deposit money banks, as key drivers of economic growth, rely heavily on the productivity of their workforce to meet operational and strategic goals. However, excessive stress can impair employees’ cognitive abilities, diminish morale, and hinder their overall performance, posing significant challenges to organizational efficiency.

In the banking sector, stressors such as long working hours, heavy workloads, job insecurity, and the pressure to achieve financial targets are prevalent. While a manageable level of stress can act as a motivator, prolonged and unmanaged stress often leads to negative outcomes such as burnout, absenteeism, and high staff turnover rates. These outcomes not only affect employees’ well-being but also threaten the banks’ ability to deliver quality services and maintain competitive advantage.

This study aims to examine the effect of stress on employee productivity in listed deposit money banks, providing insights into the underlying factors contributing to stress and exploring strategies to mitigate its impact. Understanding the relationship between stress and productivity is critical for developing effective stress management programs that enhance employee performance and organizational success.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The productivity of employees is a fundamental determinant of organizational performance, especially in service-oriented industries like banking. Despite the critical role of human capital, the adverse effects of workplace stress on employee productivity are often underestimated. Studies indicate that prolonged stress can lead to decreased job satisfaction, poor decision-making, and health complications, all of which negatively impact productivity. In listed deposit money banks, where the demand for high performance is unrelenting, stress-related issues are particularly pronounced.

The problem is further compounded by the lack of comprehensive stress management strategies in many banks. This oversight can result in financial losses, reputational damage, and a decline in customer satisfaction. Thus, there is an urgent need to investigate the extent to which stress affects employee productivity in listed deposit money banks and identify practical solutions to address this issue.
