ELECTRONIC BANKING, CURRENCY REDESIGN, AND FINANCIAL INCLUSION IN NIGERIA

Abstract

The study examines the interplay between electronic banking, currency redesign, and financial inclusion in Nigeria, exploring how these elements impact economic development and access to financial services. In recent years, Nigeria has witnessed significant transformations in its financial sector, driven by advancements in electronic banking systems and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s currency redesign policies. These initiatives aim to promote cashless transactions, reduce currency hoarding, and enhance financial inclusion, especially among underserved populations. The study employs a mixed-method approach, combining quantitative data from financial institutions and qualitative insights from stakeholders, to evaluate the effects of electronic banking and currency redesign on financial accessibility. Findings reveal that electronic banking has improved transaction efficiency, convenience, and inclusion, particularly in urban areas, but challenges persist in rural communities due to poor internet infrastructure and low digital literacy. Additionally, the currency redesign policy has encouraged formal financial participation but also created short-term disruptions, such as cash scarcity. The study concludes that while electronic banking and currency redesign hold substantial potential to enhance financial inclusion in Nigeria, addressing infrastructural gaps and promoting financial literacy are critical for sustainable outcomes. Recommendations include increased investment in digital infrastructure, targeted awareness campaigns, and policy adjustments to mitigate financial exclusion in vulnerable regions.
