INDIGENOUS APPROACHES TO SUSTAINABLE PEACE IN IKOM NIGERIA
Abstract
This study examines indigenous approaches to sustainable peace in Ikom, Nigeria, with a focus on the traditional mechanisms, practices, and values employed by local communities to resolve conflicts and promote social harmony. Drawing on qualitative data from interviews, focus group discussions, and archival research, the study highlights how indigenous methods, such as community mediation, council of elders’ interventions, and traditional rites, have effectively addressed disputes related to land ownership, chieftaincy titles, and inter-communal tensions.
Findings reveal that these approaches emphasize reconciliation, restorative justice, and collective responsibility, ensuring that conflicts are resolved in ways that strengthen social cohesion and preserve relationships. Moreover, the study identifies the role of cultural symbols, proverbs, and rituals as tools for fostering mutual understanding and healing. Despite their effectiveness, indigenous methods face challenges such as modernization, the erosion of traditional authority, and external influences from formal legal systems.
The study concludes that integrating indigenous practices with formal conflict resolution frameworks can create a hybrid model that leverages the strengths of both systems. Recommendations are made for policymakers, traditional leaders, and civil society organizations to collaborate in preserving and enhancing these indigenous approaches to promote lasting peace in Ikom and similar communities
