EXPLORING THE INFLUENCE OF FAMILY BACKGROUND ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT
Abstract
Academic achievement is a critical determinant of students’ future opportunities and overall socio-economic mobility. However, performance in school is influenced by multiple factors, among which family background plays a pivotal role. This study explores the influence of family background on students’ academic achievement, with emphasis on socio-economic status, parental education, family structure, and home environment. A mixed-method approach was employed, combining quantitative surveys administered to secondary school students with qualitative interviews to capture deeper insights. The findings reveal that students from families with higher socio-economic standing and educated parents tend to perform better academically due to access to learning resources, positive parental involvement, and a supportive home environment. Conversely, students from low-income families or unstable family structures often face challenges such as limited access to instructional materials, reduced motivation, and financial constraints, which negatively affect their academic performance. The study underscores the need for targeted interventions, such as school-based support programs, parental engagement initiatives, and policies that bridge educational inequalities. It concludes that strengthening family involvement and addressing socio-economic disparities can significantly improve students’ academic outcomes.
